Martha Washington

1731–1802

Martha Washington was a wealthy Virginia widow who married George Washington in 1759. During the American Revolutionary War she spent extended periods at the Continental Army’s winter camps, and after Washington became president she helped establish the social practices of the new executive household.

Martha Washington also held the offices or ranks of First Lady of the United States. Martha Washington belonged to the Washington family and operated within British America; United States. Martha Washington was born in Chestnut Grove, New Kent County, Virginia and died in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
