Modern Americas begins with the revolutionary crisis of the 1760s and follows the emergence of independent states across the Western Hemisphere. Independence did not occur everywhere at once, so this branch overlaps with Colonial Americas while revolutionary wars, new constitutions and struggles over sovereignty transformed older imperial systems.
The period encompasses national expansion, civil wars, abolition and emancipation, industrialisation, migration, Indigenous dispossession and resistance, social reform, dictatorship, revolution, Cold War conflict and contemporary political change. Regional and national subcategories provide the more precise setting for individual books and historical subjects.
