Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian officer who joined the American cause in 1778 and became inspector general of the Continental Army. At Valley Forge he introduced a systematic programme of drill, camp administration and battlefield manoeuvre, adapting European military practice to the circumstances of Washington’s army.
