Tiberius

43 BCE–37

Tiberius was Roman emperor from AD 14 to 37 and the successor of Augustus. An experienced commander and administrator, he inherited the new imperial system but became associated with political suspicion, withdrawal to Capri and the rise of Sejanus.

In Robert Graves’s I, Claudius, the narrative follows Rome from the last years of Augustus through the reigns of Tiberius and Caligula, showing the imperial household as a place of marriage politics, poison, exile, denunciation and succession intrigue. In Simon Turney’s Caligula, as Tiberius approaches death, Gaius Caligula emerges from a family repeatedly damaged by imperial suspicion and becomes the popular new emperor. Other novels featuring Tiberius include Steven Saylor’s Empire, L. J. Trafford’s The Wine Boy, Fiona Forsyth’s Death and the Poet, Neil Denby’s Scutarius, and Fiona Forsyth’s Written in Blood.

In non-fiction, Tiberius is discussed in Lindsay Powell’s Eager for Glory, Lindsay Powell’s Germanicus, Lindsay Powell’s Roman Soldier vs Germanic Warrior, and Lindsay Powell’s Augustus at War. In Lindsay Powell’s Eager for Glory, Eager for Glory is a biography of Nero Claudius Drusus, the younger brother of Tiberius and stepson of Augustus.
