The Flashman Papers

The Flashman Papers present the supposed memoirs of Sir Harry Paget Flashman, the bully expelled from Rugby School in Tom Brown’s School Days who becomes a decorated Victorian soldier despite being a coward, liar, opportunist and sexual predator. George MacDonald Fraser places this fictional witness inside documented nineteenth-century crises, allowing Flashman’s self-serving recollections to expose the violence, prejudice, ambition and accidental hero-making behind imperial legend.

The twelve volumes range from the First Anglo-Afghan War and the upheavals of 1848 to slavery in the Atlantic world, the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion, Borneo and Madagascar, the American West, the Opium Wars, the First Anglo-Sikh War, Harpers Ferry, the Anglo-Zulu War and the British expedition to Abyssinia. Fraser combines adventure and satire with extensive historical notes, using Flashman’s survival instinct to connect rulers, soldiers, rebels and civilians who would never otherwise share one narrative.
