Mangas Coloradas

Mangas Coloradas was a leading Mimbreño Apache chief who resisted Mexican and United States encroachment in the south-west. He formed alliances with other Apache leaders, including his son-in-law Cochise, and was involved in decades of conflict shaped by mining, settlement and retaliatory violence. In 1863 he entered a United States camp under a flag of truce, was detained and killed by soldiers.

Mangas Coloradas became one of the leading Chiricahua Apache figures resisting Mexican and American encroachment in the Southwest. During the 1860s he sought negotiations with United States forces but was seized under a flag of truce in 1863. Soldiers killed him while he was in custody, and the mutilation of his body deepened hostility and became a lasting grievance in Apache memory.

In George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman and the Redskins, after reaching Santa Fe he falls among scalp hunters, survives an Apache reprisal and enters the family of Mangas Coloradas, meeting Geronimo and Kit Carson before escaping towards the California Gold Rush.
