Ghost Warrior

Lozen, the sister of Warm Springs Apache leader Victorio, grows into a healer, seer and warrior during the intensifying struggle for control of the American Southwest. Refusing the domestic role expected of her, she rides with Victorio and other Apache leaders, using her knowledge of horses, terrain and enemy movements as communities resist raids, military pursuit and confinement on reservations imposed by the United States.

A fictional veteran and teamster, Rafe Collins, provides a second viewpoint on the decades of violence between Apache groups, Mexican settlements and the United States Army. The novel follows Lozen through alliances with Cochise, Victorio and Geronimo and treats Apache resistance as a defence of homeland, kinship and autonomy rather than a sequence of isolated frontier battles. Her spiritual gifts and military reputation remain central as forced relocation narrows the possibilities for survival.
