Victorio

Victorio was a Chihenne Apache leader who resisted removal from the Warm Springs homeland in New Mexico. From 1879 to 1880 he led a highly mobile campaign across the United States-Mexico border, repeatedly evading larger military forces. Mexican troops surrounded his band at Tres Castillos in 1880, where Victorio and many of his followers were killed.

Victorio led Chihenne Apache followers in repeated attempts to escape reservation confinement and return to their homeland around Warm Springs. From 1879 his band conducted a mobile campaign across New Mexico, Texas and northern Mexico while pursued by United States and Mexican forces. Victorio was killed with many of his followers at Tres Castillos in Chihuahua in 1880, though Apache resistance continued under other leaders.
