Lozen

Lozen was a Chihenne Apache warrior, healer and spiritual figure, and the sister of the leader Victorio. She fought during Victorio’s campaigns and later joined groups associated with Nana and Geronimo. After the final surrender in 1886 she was held as a prisoner of war and died from tuberculosis while confined in Alabama.

Lozen was closely associated with Victorio’s resistance and later with Geronimo’s band, and oral tradition remembered her for both military skill and spiritual power. She surrendered with Geronimo in 1886 and was sent east with other Chiricahua prisoners of war. Lozen died of tuberculosis at Mount Vernon Barracks in Alabama, far from the Apache homeland for which she had fought.
