Geronimo

Geronimo was a Bedonkohe Apache leader and spiritual figure who became internationally known for resistance to Mexican and United States forces. After repeated escapes from reservations, he led a small band across the borderlands until surrendering in 1886. He and other Chiricahua Apaches were held as prisoners of war, and he spent his final years appearing at public events while unsuccessfully seeking a return to his homeland.

Lucia St. Clair Robson’s Ghost Warrior presents Geronimo within Lozen’s wider Chiricahua community rather than treating him as the sole representative of Apache resistance. Fiction often exaggerates his authority or isolates him from other leaders, but his life is best understood through the repeated removals, military campaigns and contested choices that divided Apache groups.
