Ranavalona I

1788–1861

Ranavalona I was queen of Madagascar from 1828 to 1861. She defended Merina sovereignty against European influence, restricted missionary activity and relied on forced labour and severe punishments, leaving a contested legacy of anti-colonial resistance, centralisation and repression.

Ranavalona I also held the offices or ranks of queen consort, queen regnant, and King of Imerina. Ranavalona I belonged to the Merina people and operated within Merina Kingdom. Ranavalona I was born in Ambatomanoina and died in Rova of Antananarivo.
