North African Campaign
1940–1943 CE
The North African Campaign involved British, Commonwealth, Italian, German, Free French and American forces fighting across desert terrain from 1940 to 1943. Supply lines, armour, air power and ports mattered as much as battlefield manoeuvre. The campaign eventually ended with Axis surrender in Tunisia.
It mattered because control of North Africa affected the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal and the route into Italy. Desert war also created a distinctive setting of heat, distance, improvisation and mobile fighting. The campaign involved tank crews, nurses, commandos, intelligence officers, prisoners and colonial troops as well as the better-known senior commanders.
