Together We Stand

by James Holland

First published 2005

4.6(584)

In 1942, British and Commonwealth forces in North Africa confront Rommel’s army while American troops prepare to enter the western Mediterranean. The campaigns around El Alamein and Operation Torch require separate armies, air forces and political leaders to coordinate against Axis forces spread across Libya and Tunisia.

Holland follows commanders and ordinary servicemen through the transition from repeated British reverses to sustained Allied success. Victory depends on supply, shipping, air power and coalition learning rather than a single general or battle. The surrender in Tunisia in 1943 turns North Africa into the base for the invasion of Sicily.
