Otto von Bismarck

1815–1898

Otto von Bismarck was the Prussian statesman who engineered German unification through diplomacy and wars against Denmark, Austria and France. As the first chancellor of the German Empire he balanced European alliances, fought political and religious opponents and introduced pioneering social insurance before dismissal by Wilhelm II.

Otto von Bismarck also held the offices or ranks of Graf, Fürst, duke, and auscultator. Otto von Bismarck belonged to the House of Bismarck and operated within Kingdom of Prussia; German Reich. Otto von Bismarck was born in Schönhausen (Elbe) and died in Friedrichsruh.

In Thomas Pakenham’s The Scramble for Africa: The White Man’s Conquest of the Dark Continent from 1876 to 1912, Henry Morton Stanley’s work for Leopold II, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza’s French treaties and Otto von Bismarck’s Berlin Conference illustrate how claims made on paper were converted into colonies, protectorates and concessionary states. In George MacDonald Fraser’s Royal Flash, Flashman’s affair with the celebrated adventuress Lola Montez brings him into conflict with the young Otto von Bismarck. Several years later Bismarck abducts him and forces him to impersonate a Danish prince whose marriage is expected to influence the politics of the fictional German duchy of Strackenz. Further fictional perspectives on Otto von Bismarck can be found in George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman and the Tiger. For broader historical treatment of Otto von Bismarck, see Christopher Clark’s Iron Kingdom, Christopher Clark’s Kaiser Wilhelm II, Christopher Clark’s Prisoners of Time, and Lawrence JamesEmpires in the Sun.
