Toehold in Europe
Operating from Malta in 1943, Tom Harsker and his section take part in the preparations for the Allied return to continental Europe. Their work sends them behind enemy lines ahead of the invasion of Sicily, where small units must gather information, survive without conventional support and avoid compromising the larger operation.
The campaign then carries them toward the landings at Salerno on the Italian mainland. By moving ahead of the main force, the section experiences the uncertainty that surrounds amphibious warfare: changing objectives, difficult communications and the constant risk that a reconnaissance mission will turn into an isolated fight for survival.
