Scheldt Campaign and Battle for Antwerp
1944
After Antwerp was liberated in 1944, the port could not be used until the Scheldt estuary and surrounding German positions were cleared. Canadian, British and other Allied forces fought through flooded land, islands and fortified approaches.
The campaign was costly but crucial because Allied supply problems worsened after the breakout from Normandy. Opening Antwerp helped sustain operations into Germany.
For fiction, this setting provides amphibious assaults, muddy infantry fighting, commandos, German strongpoints, logistical pressure and the hard campaigns that followed the more famous D-Day landings.
