Edwardian Era

1901–1914 CE

The Edwardian Era runs from the accession of Edward VII in 1901 to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, including the first years of George V’s reign. Britain remained an imperial and industrial power, but older assumptions about class, politics and international security were increasingly challenged.

Liberal governments introduced important welfare reforms, organised labour expanded, and the campaign for women’s suffrage became more confrontational. The constitutional struggle over the House of Lords, Irish Home Rule, industrial unrest and the European arms race gave the pre-war years a growing sense of political tension beneath their reputation for elegance and social confidence.
