Goodbye to All That is Robert Graves’s autobiography of childhood, schooling, military service and early literary life. Its best-known sections describe his experience as a British officer on the Western Front during the First World War, including trench life, comradeship, injury, disillusionment and the difficulty of returning to civilian society. The book is also a farewell to the social world Graves believed the war had destroyed, moving from Edwardian assumptions into the fractured aftermath of 1914–1918.
