The Horsewarriors
During the early Roman conquest of Britannia, an auxiliary cavalry ala is repeatedly used to perform tasks beyond the strength normally expected of such a unit. Its officers know the country and the enemy, but their effectiveness is threatened when an aristocratic commander arrives from Rome with rank, confidence and little understanding of the frontier.
Bad decisions expose the cavalry to ambush, while suspicion grows that some dangers come from within the Roman force itself. The novel follows mounted troops fighting skirmishes, reconnaissance actions and sudden engagements in northern Britain, showing the conquest from the perspective of auxiliaries whose survival depends on experience even when imperial hierarchy places less capable men above them.
