Edward, the Black Prince

1330–1376

Edward, the Black Prince, was the eldest son of Edward III and one of the most famous English commanders of the Hundred Years’ War. His victories at Crécy and Poitiers made him a symbol of chivalric warfare, though his rule in Aquitaine was also harsh and contested.

In Christian Cameron’s The Ill-Made Knight, in September 1356, London cook’s boy William Gold follows the army of Edward, the Black Prince, into France and finds himself among archers, knights and camp followers before the Battle of Poitiers. In Paul Bannister’s Storm of Arrows, the developing war with France places Holland and his longbowmen beside Edward, the Black Prince, during the great raid across Normandy. Other novels featuring Edward, the Black Prince include Elizabeth Chadwick’s The Crownless Queen, Anne O’Brien’s The Shadow Queen, Griff Hosker’s Blood on the Crown, Maurice Druon’s The King without a Kingdom, and David Gilman’s To Kill a King.

In non-fiction, Edward, the Black Prince is discussed in Dan Jones’s The Plantagenets. Dan Jones’s The Plantagenets approaches the subject through court politics and dynastic power, family, marriage and personal loyalty, and political ambition and government.
