After Poitiers, the dauphin Charles attempted to govern and raise funds while the Estates General demanded reforms. Étienne Marcel mobilised Parisian support and sought limits on royal government.

Charles II of Navarre exploited the crisis, while the Jacquerie of 1358 spread through northern France before being violently suppressed. Marcel was killed when his position in Paris collapsed.

The King Without a Kingdom links these events with negotiations over John II's ransom and the wider damage caused by war, plague and armed companies.
