Bernard Montgomery

1887–1976

Bernard Montgomery was a British field marshal and one of the best-known Allied commanders of the Second World War. He led the Eighth Army at El Alamein, commanded major ground forces in Normandy and directed Operation Market Garden, while his methods and personality often caused friction with allies.

In Jeff Shaara’s The Steel Wave, Omar Bradley and Bernard Montgomery prepare the land forces, George S. Patton waits for a command, and Erwin Rommel strengthens the Atlantic Wall while arguing with the German high command over how the beaches should be defended. In Christopher Nicole’s The Afrika Korps, Warrey’s grief and damaged marriage accompany a mission to influence Arab allies and pass intelligence to Montgomery, placing personal recklessness inside the strategic crisis created by the fall of Tobruk. Other novels featuring Bernard Montgomery include Jeff Shaara’s The Rising Tide, Griff Hosker’s Commando, Griff Hosker’s Conscript’s Call, James Holland’s Hellfire, and James Holland’s The Devil’s Pact.

In non-fiction, Bernard Montgomery is discussed in Giles Milton’s D-Day, John Man’s The D-Day Atlas, James Holland’s Together We Stand, James Holland’s Italy’s Sorrow, and James Holland’s The War in the West: A New History, Volume 2. Giles Milton’s D-Day approaches the subject through military command and battlefield decision-making, social change and the pressures of ordinary life, and empire, conquest and resistance.
