Reign of Claudius
41–54 CE
Claudius was proclaimed by the Praetorian Guard after Caligula's assassination. His government increased the use of imperial secretaries, extended citizenship and admitted provincial elites to public office.
The invasion of Britain began in AD 43 and established a new province. Court politics were shaped by Claudius's marriages to Messalina and Agrippina the Younger and by competition between Britannicus and Nero.
Claudius the God presents the emperor as a capable but compromised ruler whose republican ideals are gradually defeated by power, dependence on courtiers and failures within his household.
