Waterloo Campaign
1815-06
The Waterloo Campaign began after Napoleon returned from Elba in 1815 and attempted to defeat the Anglo-allied and Prussian armies in Belgium before they could combine with other coalition forces. On 16 June the French defeated the Prussians at Ligny while fighting an inconclusive action against Wellington’s forces at Quatre Bras.
Two days later Napoleon attacked Wellington near Waterloo. The Anglo-allied army held until Prussian forces arrived in strength against the French flank, turning the battle into a decisive coalition victory. The defeat ended Napoleon’s attempt to restore his empire and was followed by his second abdication.
