Jacobean Era

1603–1625 CE

The Jacobean Era began with the accession of James VI and I. It included the aftermath of Elizabethan war, peace with Spain, the Gunpowder Plot, the King James Bible, court masques, overseas colonisation and disputes over finance and royal authority. The period carried Elizabethan energies into a more unsettled Stuart world.

It mattered because unresolved religious and constitutional questions deepened under James. The crown’s style of government, the place of Parliament and the relationship between England and Scotland all became sources of tension. Jacobean culture also produced a darker theatrical and intellectual mood.

Jacobean fiction includes S. J. Parris’s Giordano Bruno novels where they move into the Stuart transition, Rory Clements’s spy fiction, and works set around Shakespeare’s later world. It supports stories about conspiracies, court spectacle, translators, playwrights, colonists and religious outsiders.
