Gabriel Taverner Mysteries

The Gabriel Taverner Mysteries follow a former ship’s surgeon who settles as a country physician in Devon at the beginning of James I’s reign. Between 1603 and 1605, Gabriel applies medical observation and a sailor’s scepticism to deaths that draw him from the Tavy valley to Plymouth harbour and eventually back to the open sea.

The cases are rooted in the expanding commercial and maritime world of early Stuart England: silk and spice trading, Caribbean voyages, plague-displaced players, superstition, medicine and dangerous overseas competition. Coroner Theophilus Davey, Gabriel’s sister Celia and his local circle provide continuity as each mystery tests the boundary between apparently supernatural events and evidence that can be examined.
