Empress Matilda

1102–1167

Empress Matilda was the daughter of Henry I of England and the widow of Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. Henry named her as his heir, but after his death in 1135 her cousin Stephen took the throne. Matilda’s attempt to enforce her claim produced the civil war known as the Anarchy. She briefly controlled Stephen and entered London but was never crowned. Her eventual settlement secured the succession of her son Henry II.

Sharon Kay Penman’s When Christ and His Saints Slept gives Matilda and Stephen parallel, complex portrayals across the civil war. She is also an important background presence in Ellis Peters’s Brother Cadfael mysteries. Historical fiction often revisits the chroniclers’ accusation that she was excessively proud, asking whether conduct accepted in a male ruler was judged intolerable in a woman claiming sovereign authority.
