The fictional Warlord and his son Earl William are drawn into the conflict as attacks and shifting allegiances threaten their own lands as well as the king’s authority. The campaign culminates in the northern fighting around Alnwick in 1174, where William the Lion of Scotland is defeated and captured. The novel places family rebellion, baronial ambition and military service inside the crisis that nearly broke Henry II’s Angevin realm.
