Book
Warlord’s War
Stephen’s capture appears to have delivered victory to the Empress Matilda, but the advantage collapses while the Earl of Cleveland is in Normandy. Her forces are defeated, Robert of Gloucester is taken prisoner and the succession war returns to uncertainty.
The Earl must cross back into England and fight through both Stephen’s supporters and a severe winter to reach the Empress. At his side is the young Henry, future Henry II, serving as his squire and learning how fragile royal claims become when armies, hostages and alliances change hands. The novel places the Warlord’s rescue mission inside the reversals of the Anarchy, where neither side can convert a temporary victory into lasting peace.
