Book
The Sanctuary Sparrow
First published 1983
Spring, 1140. A young entertainer named Liliwin flees a wedding feast after being accused of robbery and violence, escaping a pursuing crowd by claiming sanctuary at Shrewsbury Abbey. The townspeople are convinced of his guilt, but Brother Cadfael is troubled by the speed with which blame has settled on a convenient outsider.
Cadfael investigates the household in which the crime occurred and the relationships concealed beneath its respectable surface. As further evidence emerges, the case becomes a test of whether sanctuary can protect an innocent man long enough for the truth to be established.
