August 1143. While ploughing land recently acquired by Shrewsbury Abbey, workers uncover the remains of a woman buried in haste. The field had once belonged to a potter who later became a monk, and the discovery immediately raises questions about his former household and the circumstances in which the woman died.
Brother Cadfael is unwilling to accept an easy explanation. His inquiry leads through old relationships, abandoned property and memories that those involved would prefer to leave undisturbed. The mystery turns on establishing not only who the dead woman was, but why her body was hidden in land that eventually came into the abbey’s possession.
