Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex

1092–1144

Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, was a powerful magnate during the English civil war between Stephen and Empress Matilda. He obtained extensive offices and privileges from Stephen, then negotiated with Matilda when her position improved, and later shifted allegiance again.

After Stephen arrested him in 1143, Geoffrey rebelled from the fenlands and seized church property. He died from a wound in 1144 while under excommunication, becoming a symbol of the lawlessness of the Anarchy.

Elizabeth Chadwick’s A Place Beyond Courage places Geoffrey de Mandeville among the magnates whose shifting loyalties make the Anarchy so dangerous for John FitzGilbert and other royal servants. His ability to bargain between Stephen and Empress Matilda, accumulate offices and then turn against the king exemplifies the political volatility surrounding the disputed succession. Ellis PetersThe Holy Thief and The Potter’s Field approach the same civil war from Shrewsbury, where Cadfael’s local investigations unfold against a kingdom fractured by rival allegiances and by lords such as de Mandeville who can turn private power into regional warfare. In all three books, his importance lies in showing how weak central kingship allowed individual barons to become powers in their own right.
