In 1137 the Benedictines of Shrewsbury Abbey seek to bring the relics of Saint Winifred from the Welsh village of Gwytherin to their own church. Brother Cadfael, a Welshman by birth and a former soldier, joins the expedition as interpreter and herbalist, but the proposal divides the local community and meets determined resistance.
When Rhisiart, the principal opponent of the removal, is found murdered, the monks’ pious mission becomes a criminal investigation. Cadfael must separate religious ambition, local rights and private motives while ensuring that an innocent person is not sacrificed to the abbey’s desire for a saint. The case establishes the combination of monastic life, medicine and detection that defines the series.
