Siege of Shrewsbury (1138)

The Siege of Shrewsbury took place in August 1138 during the opening phase of The Anarchy. William FitzAlan and other supporters of Empress Matilda rebelled against King Stephen, holding Shrewsbury Castle while Stephen advanced into the Welsh Marches. FitzAlan escaped before the castle fell, but the remaining garrison was captured.

Stephen ordered many of the defenders to be executed, demonstrating how quickly the disputed succession had become a brutal civil war. Control of Shrewsbury also mattered because the town and castle guarded routes through the Marches and linked royal authority with a strategically important border region.

Ellis Peters uses the siege and its aftermath as the historical foundation of One Corpse Too Many. The novel places Brother Cadfael among the executed garrison and turns the discovery of an additional body into a murder investigation within a documented episode of The Anarchy.
