After Henry I’s death, his daughter Matilda returns to England to claim the crown promised to her, only to find Stephen already established as king. Told through the contrasting experiences of the two women, the novel follows the sieges, reversals and personal compromises of the Anarchy. Matilda must confront the hostility directed at a woman who seeks to rule, while Adeliza attempts to preserve family bonds across a civil war that makes neutrality almost impossible.
