The Italian Campaign began with Allied landings in Sicily in 1943 and continued through a difficult advance up the mainland. Italy’s surrender, German occupation, mountainous terrain and fortified defensive lines turned the campaign into a long and costly struggle.
The campaign mattered because it tied down German forces, opened a southern European front and placed civilians, prisoners of war, partisans and regular armies in a shifting military landscape. The fall of Mussolini did not end the violence in Italy.
