In 1980s New York, an apparently inexplicable killing and the discovery of a valuable Italian artefact lead back to Tuscany in 1944. Four African American soldiers from the segregated 92nd Infantry Division become separated from their unit during combat and take refuge in a mountain village, where the gentle Sam Train forms a protective bond with an orphaned Italian boy.

The soldiers are caught between German troops, Italian partisans, frightened civilians and tensions within their own squad as the history of a nearby massacre begins to emerge. McBride combines a military thriller with faith, folklore and a mystery about betrayal, asking what loyalty means for Black servicemen fighting fascism abroad while denied equal citizenship by the country whose uniform they wear.
