Rome Escape Line

The Rome Escape Line trilogy follows a fictionalised version of the clandestine network organised in Vatican City by the Irish priest Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty after German forces occupied Rome in September 1943. Diplomats, clergy, aristocrats, soldiers, students and civilians form the group known as the Choir, using the Vatican’s neutrality, forged papers, safe houses and personal courage to hide refugees and move escaped Allied prisoners beyond the reach of the Gestapo.

Across the sequence, the viewpoint shifts among members of the network as the occupation moves from its first months towards the Allied advance of 1944. Gestapo chief Paul Hauptmann closes in while the Choir’s missions become more dangerous, forcing each participant to decide what resistance requires and whom they are prepared to endanger. The novels combine the documented history of O’Flaherty’s escape line with invented characters and operations, treating courage as a collective practice rather than the achievement of a single hero.
