Robert the Bruce

1274–1329

Robert the Bruce was king of Scots from 1306 to 1329 and the central royal figure in Scotland’s war of independence. His victory at Bannockburn in 1314 and long struggle against English power made him a foundational figure in Scottish history.

In Jack Whyte’s Order in Chaos, the fugitives seek protection in Scotland, where Robert the Bruce is fighting to secure his crown against England. In Candace Robb’s The Fire in the Flint, Margaret Kerr remains loyal to the deposed John Balliol while her husband Roger serves Robert the Bruce, placing their marriage on opposite sides of Scotland's divided resistance. Other novels featuring Robert the Bruce include Robyn Young’s Insurrection, Robyn Young’s Renegade, Jack Whyte’s Resistance, Jack Whyte’s Uprising, and Tim Hodkinson’s Lions of the Grail.
