Treaty of Edinburgh–Northampton

Years of Scottish raids, English political upheaval and unsuccessful attempts to restore Edward II’s position brought the governments of Robert the Bruce and the young Edward III to negotiation in 1328.

The settlement was agreed at Edinburgh in March and ratified at Northampton in May. England renounced claims of overlordship, recognised Bruce and the independence of Scotland, and arranged the marriage of David Bruce to Joan of the Tower.
