Archie Forbes grows up in Scotland after his father is killed and his family's estates are taken by their enemies. As resistance to Edward I gathers strength, Archie forms a small band of followers and joins William Wallace, taking part in raids and campaigns that turn a private grievance into commitment to the wider struggle for Scottish independence.

After Wallace's defeat, Archie continues the fight alongside Robert the Bruce. His adventures carry him through Stirling Bridge, Falkirk, hiding places, missions and renewed warfare as the Scottish cause passes from one leader to another. The novel uses Archie's long involvement to connect the legendary careers of Wallace and Bruce while showing the instability faced by lesser landholders whose fortunes could be destroyed or restored by the shifting allegiance of a kingdom at war.
