In 1300 an English vessel known as the Waxman is captured by ships of the Hanseatic League while carrying a valuable collection of sea charts called the Carta Mysteriosa. Three years later, a Hanseatic representative, Wilhelm von Paulents, arrives in England amid rumours that he now possesses the missing maps.

Sir Hugh Corbett is sent to negotiate, but the mission becomes a murder inquiry when von Paulents and members of his household are killed. The charts remain behind, suggesting that robbery was not the obvious motive. Corbett must determine why the German delegation was targeted and what political or commercial interests are concealed behind the coveted maritime information.
