After the civil wars, Octavian took the name Augustus and presented his authority as a restoration of the republic. In practice, he controlled the army, major provinces and the highest honours of the state.

The new system depended on dynastic planning as well as public institutions. The deaths, marriages, adoptions and exiles within the imperial household repeatedly changed the expected succession.
