Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick

1428–1471

Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, was one of the richest magnates in England and became known as the “Kingmaker” for his role in the Wars of the Roses. He helped Edward IV take the throne but broke with him over the Woodville marriage and foreign policy.

After failed rebellions Warwick allied with Margaret of Anjou, restored Henry VI and returned from exile. Edward defeated and killed him at Barnet in 1471. Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick was born in Norwich and died in London Borough of Barnet.

Derek Birks’s Kingdom of Rebels and Toby Clements’s Kingmaker: Divided Souls place Warwick at the heart of the shifting alliances that turn Yorkist victory into renewed civil war, showing how his power as magnate and commander can make or unmake kings. David Pilling’s Kingbreaker (III) follows the breakdown of Warwick’s relationship with Edward IV and the extraordinary alliance with his former Lancastrian enemies. Kingmaker: Winter Pilgrims introduces the conflict from the perspective of lesser people drawn into Warwick’s military network as the first battles erupt. Thomas Penn’s The Brothers York provides the broader dynastic frame, showing how Warwick’s ambitions and foreign policy disputes widened the divisions among Edward IV, Clarence and Gloucester.
