After Edward IV regains the throne in 1471, the deaths of Warwick, Henry VI and the Lancastrian heir appear to have ended the immediate struggle for the crown. Isobel has recovered Beaumoncote and hopes to establish a household with Robert Langton and their child, but royal peace does not remove the obligations created by kinship, patronage and previous service.
Robert is drawn overseas while Isobel faces a new opponent at home, and both become entangled in the growing contrast between Edward’s brothers. George, Duke of Clarence, pursues status and inheritance with increasing resentment, while Richard, Duke of Gloucester, builds a reputation for disciplined loyalty. Their rivalry turns the Langtons’ attempt at domestic recovery into another test of which affinities can be trusted.
