In 1477, Robert Langton returns to Isobel after captivity in North Africa and fighting at sea against Barbary corsairs. Edward IV receives him as a hero, but the experience has left Robert withdrawn, volatile and unable to resume the marriage and household he left behind. Isobel tries to protect both him and their family while recognising that survival has changed the man she expected to recover.

At court, pamphlets challenge Edward’s legitimacy and suspicion falls on his brother George, Duke of Clarence. Clarence attempts to use Robert as tensions between the royal brothers move towards arrest, attainder and execution. Robert’s damaged judgement places him at risk of being treated as a participant in treason, leaving Isobel to prove the Langtons’ loyalty before Clarence’s fall destroys another Yorkist household.
