Cambridge historian Emma D’Eresby accepts a year-long teaching post at a university in Maine so that she can study a seventeenth-century English journal held in its library. The diary has fascinated her since her grandfather left her a fragment, but her research is disrupted by her immediate attraction to the reserved surgeon Matthew Lynes and by the unwelcome pursuit of colleague Sam Weisner.

A series of attacks on women creates fear across the campus, and Emma begins to suspect that she is being watched. Matthew repeatedly appears when she is in danger, yet his knowledge, manners and connection to the diary raise questions he refuses to answer. As Halloween approaches, Emma’s search for the journal and the identity of her stalker converge with the discovery that Matthew’s past cannot be explained by ordinary history.
