Æthelred the Unready

967–1016

Æthelred the Unready was the English king who ruled during a period of renewed Viking invasion. His reign saw repeated Danish attacks, heavy tribute payments and political instability, ending with the conquest of England by Sweyn Forkbeard and later conflict involving his son Edmund Ironside.

In Cecelia Holland’s Kings of the North, Richard II sends his sister Emma to marry Æthelred the Unready, binding Norman interests to an English court already threatened by Scandinavian attack. Griff Hosker’s The Dragon Sword places Æthelred the Unready within a narrative shaped by court politics and dynastic power and family, marriage and personal loyalty. Other novels featuring Æthelred the Unready include M J Porter’s The Eagle Will Rise, M J Porter’s The King’s Mother, Griff Hosker’s Viking Slave, M J Porter’s Wulfstan – an Anglo-Saxon Thegn (the Earls of Mercia Side Stories), and Ken Follett’s The Evening and the Morning.
