The King’s Mother
Tenth-century England. The widowed Ælfthryth has helped secure the throne for her young son Æthelred after the murder of his half-brother Edward. Suspicion surrounding Edward’s death follows her into the new reign, while rival nobles seek to weaken the influence of a queen mother who has already demonstrated unusual political authority.
Viking attacks increase the pressure on the court as Æthelred grows older and begins to resent his mother’s control. Deaths among her allies and manoeuvring by competing factions gradually isolate Ælfthryth, forcing her to defend both her reputation and her place in a royal household increasingly determined to govern without her.
