Harthacnut takes the English throne determined to punish the men he believes denied him his inheritance. His hostility falls most heavily on Earl Godwine, while Earl Leofric of Mercia tries to protect his lands from the new king's taxes and from the political consequences of opposing royal authority.
As Mercia struggles under financial demands and even Leofric's household becomes involved in resistance, Earl Siward's more distant power in the north gives him a different relationship with the king. The novel follows the competing earls through Harthacnut's brief reign, when vengeance, taxation and succession again threaten the balance among England's greatest noble families.
